La Punta
Zicatela Horseback Riding (2) (1920x1440)
La Punta is the beach closest to Casamar, a 1-minute walk away. At the southern end of Zicatela Beach and recognizable by its rocky point, La Punta is a good intermediate surf spot. The beach features a lifeguard tower and a few palapa restaurants. While La Punta is right outside of Puerto Escondido, it is known for its laid back, village-style ambiance. Grab dinner, go for a horseback ride, take a surf lesson, rent some bikes. Lots of fun options here!

Lagoon Manialtepec
Manialtepec, Oaxaca
Located 20 minutes west of Puerto Escondido, the lagoon is situated between the foothills of the Sierra Madre del Sur and the Pacific Coast. It is deeper and fresher than Chacahua. During the rainy season, the Río Manialtepec breaks through the sandbar and the lagoon becomes a tidal estuary. At certain times of the year it is possible to see the bioluminescence created by billions of glowing marine plankton. A truly magical experience. Guided tours of the lagoon are available. There are many species of birds–cormorant, anhinga, herons (including great blue, little blue, black-crowned night heron), ibis, parrots, egrets, ducks, jacanas (lily walkers).

Puerto Ángel
Puerto Angel
The small fishing town, 50 miles east of Puerto Escondido. Naval base and traveler’s hangout, it sits on a small horseshoe bay whose entrance is protected by craggy outcroppings of rock. This protects the two beaches within the bay from strong ocean currents, which are common on other beaches along this coast, and make this area safe for swimming. Playa Estacahuite is a great snorkel spot. Playa La Boquilla, closer to Pochutla, is a hidden paradise.
